Representation of woman

In this collage, I am displaying the representation of women in different ways. I can see they are being portrayed as different things such as beauty bunny, size and physique, sexuality and fashionista.

Gender representation

How might the following objects be gendered through advertising?

Sports car -

Men: To advertise a sports car to a man I would have a very awkward looking male wearing over sized nerd glasses and a bow tie in the drivers seat accompanied by a beautiful model such as Adrianna Lima in the passenger seat, hugging him and running her fingers through his hair.  The ad would feature them speeding down a sunny highway, somewhere like Venice beach with palm trees in the background. The message that this is putting across is that if you buy this car you are instantly cool and attractive.

Women: A sports car advertised towards a woman would have a few girls (however many the car will fit) on a road trip blasting their music, singing along badly, laughing and just generally having fun together. The song would be a up beat, cheesy, girly one such as ‘girls just wanna have fun’. The ad is showing the far in a fun, feminine light making it more appealing to women.

A diving watch -

Men: For a man I would have a man wearing a non waterproof watch on him getting pushed off a yacht into the sea by his friends, getting his watch wet and therefore breaking it. He would glance at his watch and rush out of the water looking annoyed and upset. I would then replay the scene but this time with the man wearing the waterproof diving watch looking happy and laughing while pulling his friends into the water with him.

Women: For a woman the ad would have a female diving off a pier into the water swimming with the fishes on a coral reef. She would then look at her watch and realise she is late. She rushes out of the water, grabs her clothes and runs to her car speeding off into the distance.

Toilet paper –

Men: toilet paper advertised to a male I would have a man on the toilet sweating and panting. Once he is finished he then looks at the toilet paper but realising only to his horror that there is none left. He frantically searches around the bathroom, panicking until he opens the cabinet under the sink and finds a role.

Women: A woman has spilled red wine all over the floor and she tells her friends to get toilet role to clean it up but the toilet role keeps tearing and ripping apart. Then she whips out her toilet role from her bag and lays one piece on the spill and suddenly it’s all gone. The slogan would be “shockingly absorbent”.

Deodorant –

Men: An ugly man would be at a club and no one is going up to him because he has sweat patches under his arms. Then his friend gives him the deodorant and he sprays it then he looks so much better, and suddenly all the guys and girls are saying hi to him and as he looks over his shoulder a geek in the corner looks sad.

Women: there would be a woman and all her colleagues would be laughing at her behind her back and then the next time she comes to work they smell her and they all look at each other in shock and shame.

Cigarettes -

Men: A man would be at his house with his feat up and his wife shouting at him. Then he would take his packet of cigarettes out and his wife would disappear and all that would be left is himself and the T.V and he sits down while he’s watching football and smokes.

Women: For a woman there would be a lady very upset and she picks up a pack of cigarettes and then suddenly she’s somewhere happy and quiet and peaceful.  The slogan would be “ make it what you want”. This would persuade woman to buy this because they would feel like it could help any situation.

Ipod –

Men & women:  Both the man and the woman could be sitting down on a bench with their headphones in and then they suddenly start singing the same song. Then the ipod would turn into a wedding ring and they would be at the church getting married. The slogan would be “music brings people together”.

A game console -

Men & woman: The game console could have different famous celebrities playing on it.

An airline -

Men & women: In this advert I would have a man/woman entering the plane alone and then suddenly leaving with loads of people.

Bottled beer –

Man: For a man I would have 3 men gathering around the table and the beer around them and when a girl wants to pick the bottle up she gets zapped. The slogan would be “the manliest drink around.”

Woman: For a woman there would have a lady sitting down and reading a label on the drink that says ‘NOT FOR MEN’. This would encourage more ladies to buy this drink because it would be made and designed just for them.

'Miss Dior Cherie'

In this photo Maryna Linchuk looks like a young but very classy, and sophisticated woman. She is advertising a perfume called ‘Miss Dior Cherie’. I think that this advert is meant to bring out the natural beauty of the product, to show that the perfume has a light fresh scent because of the flowers surrounding her and the garden setting in the background.

In this picture she is promoting a feminine lifestyle. You can see this because she has got different shades of pink in the advert, which is a colour that is dominated by women.  Maryna is staring straight into the camera, towards the audience showing a direct mode of address.  The image seems to be cropped because you cannot see the full size of her body or it could possibly be the way the camera has been positioned.

The lighting is natural rather than artificial to coordinate with the whole outdoors aspect of the image. Her face and skin look smooth witch suggests that the image has been retouched/airbrushed.  The perfume is being branded as a fun, youthful fragrant and by adopting a childish hands-on-hips posture she’s showing that.

Female stereotypes

Photo 1 links with ‘The alpha female’: because you can tell through this photo that her main focus is her career. She looks like she spends most of her time doing her work and she has a soft motherly, wife and lover type look with her and she looks very dedicated and committed to her work.

Photo 2 links with ‘The beauty bunny’: because she looks very glamorous and she is advertising a beauty product. She looks like she would buy all the latest beauty products and L’Oreal’ because I’m worth it’ is defiantly her catchphrase.

Photo 3 links with ‘The fashionista: because she defiantly looks glamorous and she looks like she gets all the latest clothes and takes pride in what she wears. Also because she looks high fashion i would be able to tell that she would be too interested in what she wore to care about anything else (no intelligence, personality etc..)

Photo 4 links with ‘The perfect mum’: because she’s got her son pushing her and she looks like she puts her children in front of herself, she also doesn’t look sexy or ambitious.

Photo 5 links with ‘The granny’: because she looks intelligent like she’s very experienced with everything and she looks calm and proud.
